All About Us
The ACT School Canteen Association (ACTSCA) is
a voluntary, non-funded, not for profit, organisation, which
aims to assist school canteens to provide good, nutritious
food and at the same time to operate the canteen using best
practice in all aspects of its operations.
ACTSCA was formed in 1988 following a
meeting held at the Belconnen Health Centre. It brought
together canteen staff and members of school communities
who recognised that students should be encouraged to buy
more nutritious foods and that canteens needed to offer better
choices and to implement change.
ACTSCA exists to provide information, support and encouragement
to its members. It recognises that the unique nature
of a commercial venture run by volunteers needs special support. Issues,
such as financial management, OH&S, Food Safety laws, industrial
relations, the GST, etc have become more complex. At
the same time, there have been changes in the cultural mix
with rapidly different lifestyles, and canteen staff are
looking to better provide a range of food suitable for
sale.
ACTSCA has developed many contacts with government and non-government
agencies, which have meant it can provide members with up-to-date
and accurate information, and in many ways acts as a conduit
between members and outside organisations, which means that
canteen staff and operators receive the correct information
that they need on any given topic.
ACTSCA wholeheartedly supports school canteens to provide a
balanced nutritious range of foods to students, BUT IT
WILL NOT direct any canteen employer, employee or operator
on how to conduct their business, who to employ, what to sell
or in any way act as a ‘watchdog’
ACTSCA is a founding member of, FOCiS Inc (Federation of Canteens
in Schools) which brings together school canteen associations
and other like minded organisations to pool their knowledge
and resources for the benefit of all schools in Australia.
Our Aims are to:
SUPPORT school communities to operate economically viable
canteens which provide good food choices in a ‘food safe’ environment.
ENCOURAGE school canteens to provide the best possible service
PROMOTE the use by schools of their canteens as a medium of
nutrition education
DEVELOP school canteen resources which include self-help initiatives
and community co-operation
FOSTER education in school communities in sound eating habits
ADVISE on the development of skills and competencies which
will lead to sound management practices
